BTS of Spring's New Print

A print that shows the power of colour. Reworked from rich berry reds into a softer spring palette, these blooms tell a different story this season. Here’s how they came to life in the studio.

First Steps

This print has a delicacy that I love in its first iteration of a pencil drawing. Butterflies and hellebores (winter's roses) all hint at the first whisper of spring.

Carving

The drawing is then traced and carved by hand into teak wood to form the blocks that will be used for printing. This is my eighth collection, and as my prints grow more detailed, it’s extraordinary to see how the artisans' hands translate every detail - transforming my pencil lines into living pattern. My drawings may spark the design, but it’s their craftsmanship that brings it to life.

"Like sky beside foliage, I love how blue brings calm to green’s freshness. When sampling, it was important to harmonise the two with restraint, ensuring neither overshadowed the other."

Printing

Harmony between the colours was a key focus during sampling. With a block for each colour (five in total, including the outline), we tested multiple combinations, drying them in the sun before settling on the final palette.

Styling

And finally, the collection's debut at Samode Haveli. As the day unfolded and the light shifted, the brilliance of the colours revealed itself. In strong midday sun, the blue sharpened and cooled while the greens stayed fresh against the surrounding foliage. In shade, the blue softened and the green deepened.

"Is there anything more hopeful than that first garden dinner of the year? Lay the table with love, plenty of fruit, flowers and of course, food."
