Berry Red Block Print BTS

Berry Red Block Print BTS

This season, I turned to winter’s quiet beauty - frost-touched flowers, deep reds and brimstone butterflies - to inspire a new block-printed table linen: Rose Orchard. Drawn by hand and printed in Jaipur, it’s an unapologetically festive design.

The Colour

Inspired by the lustre of cranberries and pomegranates and the warmth of mulled wine, this is a festive red as sophisticated as it is playful. With a mood board bursting with berries, hellebores and camellias, the nature that somehow braves winter's cold, I set about drawing the print.

Drawing

I draw prints much as I arrange a bouquet of flowers: starting with the hero - in this case, a full-petalled ranunculus - then surrounding it with foliage and complementing it with supporting blooms like the smaller snowdrops and camellias. Finally, crab apple fruits and butterflies bring freshness and movement.

Carving

The drawing is then traced and carved by hand into teak wood to form the blocks that will be used for printing. This is my eighth collection, and as my prints grow more detailed, it’s extraordinary to see how the artisans' hands translate every detail - transforming my pencil lines into living pattern. My drawings may spark the design, but it’s their craftsmanship that brings it to life.

"The print requires two blocks: the background colour is placed first before outline block for the details is aligned on top with the utmost precision."

Styling

What an honour to debut the collection at Jamavar Jaipur at The Leela Palace Jaipur. Lit only by candlelight, Jamavar shimmers with the reflection of 350,000 hand-cut thikri mirrors, so I kept the styling minimal. I leant into the red colourway with matching candles and velvet ribbons, as well as a few single red roses and a delicious centrepiece of pomegranates.

Bring It Home

When styling these table linens at home, the same principles work just as well: layer shades of berry red, lean on candlelight and as it gets closer to Christmas, add some evergreen foliage as a centrepiece. Nothing feels more traditionally festive than the complementary colours of red and green.

"I’ve always shied away from traditional festive colours, but this shade feels as celebratory as it does sophisticated — just what’s needed this year."
